Since ancient times millers and local people have been using the mills to obtain mechanical power for works such as wheat grinding and water pumping. Windmills are some of the important symbols of Datça for the preservation of cultural values. There are 19 windmills in our district.

Neocraft Transfer TR #2:Water Mill

The Water miller sets a mill on the channels that carry the river water, and controls the valves of the day and night to prevent everything from drifting through a sudden flood. It is always up to the miller to remove the wheat grain, grind it, sift it and remove it as flour.
The greatest advantage of water mills is that they work directly with the free source of energy provided by nature.

Neocraft Transfer TR #3:Silk Worm Cultivator

Nearly in every village in Datça silkworm rearing was famous. Once tourism in Datça picked up in the 1980s, sericulture was rapidly forgotten. This craft has been come into prominence thanks to volunteers’ efforts. A sweet haste sets in to Datça in every Spring. The silkworms start to feed in April, and in May, they start weaving cocoons. In early June, the silk is turned into skeins via a process called “gelep,” carried out with collective labor.

Neocraft Transfer TR #4:Silk Weaving

Lately, as in the past Silk Weaving  has become one of the most important incomes of some villages in Datça. The balls of silk resulting from the boiling process are unwound and turned into skeins. A cocoon can yield approximately one continuous kilometer of thread. These threads are woven on looms to be turned into various items of clothing.

Rug weaving is mostly done by women in benches called “Istar”. Rug is one of the oldest types of weaving. Rug weaving is a respected craft.
Natural paint (root paint) and wool handmade rugs are a cultural phenomenon in Turkey.
In the past, rugs were sent to army commanders, kings and queens as a gift in order to reinforce relations with European countries.

A basket weaver is a person who makes baskets or furniture from wicker, bushes or reeds. In Datça, baskets were used to carry products such as figs, olives, grapes, bonitos and even sand. It has a shape and solidity according to the work that is used. With the developing technology, there are only a few people doing this craft in Datça.

Sculptor is an artist who makes sculptures. Today in Datça especially in Knidos Academy , the stone is realized in different concepts; sculpture workshops and symposiums, art works produced by national and international sculptors are exhibited. Every new activity enriches the academy’s sculptural garden.

A wine maker is a person who makes wine by growing grapes or buying grapes from the vineyards in the area. It was an important job in ancient times. A winery was discovered with a well preserved infrastructure during the excavation in Old Knidos region in Burgaz Datça. Nowadays, with the decrease of vineyards in our region, the importance of this profession has decreased.

A cook is a person who makes the cooking profession. Since Datça is a peninsula stretching to the Aegean Sea and a tourist area, fish and olive oil cooking culture has developed considerably. Tourism has produced the quality food production in the region and hence the need for quality cooks. There is a high school and a college in the area that serves this need.

A Stone Worker is someone who deals with stone decoration and coating. In the past, the buildings built by stone masters on Datça Peninsula were in the majority. The fact that recently, stone coating is preferred in the buildings built in our region has brought this profession back to the foreground.

A fisherman is a person who catches and/or sells fish.  The fact that three sides of Datça are surrounded by the sea, has made it one of the basic livelihoods of the region. Despite the decreasing rate of fish in recent years, the number of people who have lived in this profession cannot be underestimated.

Fishing Supplies Vendor ties knots or hooks in fishing line for catching different fish besides selling the necessary supplies for fishing. Despite being on the market, the importance of hand-fishing has not lost its importance. Well-crafted hand pieces are ideal for fishing in and around Datça region. Despite the availability of ready-made items, it is not preferred.

Leather Sandals Making is a family business unique to the Datça region. Since the 1970s, two brothers have been manufacturing and selling 100% leather sandals, shoes, wallets and various leather ornaments in 2 different shops in the region. All of the products are handmade and mostly preferred by tourists.

Neocraft Transfer TR #14:Potter

Ceramics and pottery are the art of obtaining fancy vessels in various forms, from clay paste, shaping, cooking and glazing.
In the very old years (4th century BC) this profession became important in Datça, Hızırşah and Burgaz (Old Knidos) region. Knidos was one of the most important ports, then and some of the necessary amphora for transportation were produced in Datça. Today this profession is made for decoration purposes.

The archaeologist is in the process of examining the remains of a lost civilization, and these inspections make rigorous excavations in places where they ultimately determine. They especially benefit from photos taken from the air and the old city plans. This profession is important for the region as it already has archaeological excavations in the city of Knidos in Datça.

Calligrapher is the name given to Arabic, Persian, Ottoman or Turkish script writers who are dealing with calligraphy. As painting in Islamic religion was forbidden, it was a reminder to embellish texts in Islamic countries. For this reason, there is a great similarity between the art of calligraphy and the present non-figurative art of painting.
